It is ‘Now’ For Lougheed - Aug. 31, 1971

This Calgary Herald front page from 1971 illustrates a new political era for Alberta. In the 1971 Alberta general election, a 36-year-old political dynasty led by the Social Credit government came to an abrupt halt, ended by a dynamic new leader in Progressive Conservative Peter Lougheed. The young Calgary lawyer would bring a new, modern government to Alberta, marking its shift from a largely rural province to an urban government that would soon head into numerous conflicts with the federal government over control of energy resources. More remarkably, this election marked the beginning of what is set to be the longest-serving government in Canadian history.
